We're sitting on a deck in Auburn watching a beautiful California sunrise. It's a clear crisp fall-like morning with pinks and golds streaking the morning sky. We're 24 hours away from departure for the Cook Islands and yes we're restless and anxious.

Spent some time in Reno to visit family and friends last week. Ahhh, NFL Sunday - at a casino we got to watch every game - a good day for the Eagles, not as good for the Niners. Great day anyway. Monday Night Football and chicken wings, oh yes, this is a good start. Tuesday, our friend and excellent chef Mike hosted a fabulous spread for us. Leaving no detail unattended, he even made vegetarian alternatives for my sister, who is apparently the only vegetarian allergic to most fruits and vegetables ... go figure.

Later in the week we had a chance to visit a local brew pub for a friend Scott's birthday. Great Basin had some unique serving towers and the brewer has several house favorites and a long list of seasonal brews. Lots of fun was had by all (click here for photos).

For those of you who know us well, you know that live music is a large part of our lives. Saturday, we had an opportunity to listen to Tishamingo, a band of southern rockers, in Lake Tahoe. If they visit you in your town, go see them, we really enjoyed their music and energy. Strains of The Allmans and some other classic southern boys could be heard, but these guys brought their own unique style and jammy sound with them as well. Great music, nice fellows. And much thanks to our benefactor the owner of the Crystal Bay Club who made sure we had great seats and a good time.

Next morning we were off to Auburn to see more family. This town sure has grown since we were here last. But not a bad place to spend a last day in the states. We're off to visit the in-laws, stay tuned ... next stop Cook Islands.
